We’ve Gone Solar!

UPDATE: OUR SYSTEM IS INSTALLED AND WE ARE PRODUCING OUR OWN POWER!

The process took 6 months from contract – with a 4 month delay due to a shortage of computer chips for the Powerwalls.

We have 40 Q-Cell panels and 3 Powerwalls.

The PG&E transformer is older and won’t accommodate a lot of power being pushed back into the grid, so we have a limit on what we can send to the utility.

On the day below, we produced 100% of our power. The yellow line shows what we got directly from the solar panels, the green shows what we got from the batteries.

It’s been a learning curve. There’s not a ton of manual control, but the Powerwall system is able to be taken off-grid completely and it has a time based control algorithm built in so that we are buying power when the price is low (earlier in the day) and storing it for use during the peak pricing period. In the summer, we pay 49c per kWh most of the day, but we pay 60c per kWh from 4-9pm. It’s about 10c less in the winter.

We currently have a storm rolling in so the powerwall may charge from the grid some in the morning so we can avoid paying the higher cost in the afternoon.

INITIAL POST: THE PROPOSAL & SELECTION PROCESS WAS OVERWHELMING.

The cost of electricity has gotten so out of hand we have finally given in and decided we have to go solar.

For those who don’t know – I work for PG&E. My first job with them was as a liaison between the company and developers. Part of that entailed coordinating with the solar division.

In addition to that knowledge, I’ve done my homework and learned a lot about the industry, the process and specific companies. I’m sharing that in the hopes that others looking to go solar don’t have to do quite as much research.

Selecting a Solar Provider

There’s 3 things we considered when looking at which company to go with:

Equipment
Company Reputation
Cost

Cost is important and did play a role in our decision, but we did not choose the cheapest system for several reasons, which will become clear during this post.

Equipment

TIERS

Solar panels are classified into tiers – there are technically 3 but the lines between tiers 2 & 3 have become fuzzy. Below is a great post about tiers 1 and 2.

The bottom line is that tier 1 companies are financially stable, offer a better warranty, and produce a better product.

Panels

Most solar panels and/or their components are built in China. Q Cells are manufactured in the USA, have the highest production per panel and are the most reliable. They are working on creating a supply chain that is 100% USA based – meaning future supply chain issues from China will not be a problem for production.

Batteries

The top of the line batteries are the Tesla Powerwalls. The 3rd generation is the most current – so when comparing, if someone is selling you 2nd gen, you are getting an older product.

Company Reputation

Industry Issues

Solar companies experienced some challenges in recent years, forcing many to go out of business. There were significant supply issues a few years ago (remember the data chip issue?) causing major delays in system builds across the country.

So the companies I would have recommended 5 years ago have lost their edge.

Better Business Bureau

I can’t stress the importance of looking at the BBB information in evaluating companies.

BBB gives a letter grade to each company which indicates how the company addresses complaints.

Rating factors include

Complaint & resolution history
Type of business
Time in business
Transparency
Honoring commitments
Licensing

All of these are important, but their complaint history will show you how well they communicate with customers who have encountered problems.

Communication

Even in the proposal stage, communication was in issue with some companies. Ultimately the one we chose went above and beyond in this area. And we feel confident that we can make contact with the right people should there be problems either during construction or if the system has problems down the line.

Cost

We selected 6 companies to provide proposals. 4 companies gave us numbers but only 2 companies gave us complete proposals.

Of those 2, one was $10k more expensive in overall cost (including finance charges and interest). However, we chose to go with that company because they provided a better product, better production, better warranty, and better customer service.

Cost of the system itself is not the only factor in actual cost. The other factors are warranty, how much of the system production reduces year over year, how much of the system offsets your electric usage (meaning how much will you pay the power company).

Your system should offset more than 100% your annual electricity usage. Ideally, you should only be paying basic fees to the utility, no power usage.

Purchase VS Lease (aka PPA)

You have to ways to pay for solar – purchase or what’s called a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

With purchase – you can either pay cash and own the system outright or you can qualify for a loan through the solar company (most require a minimum 650 credit score).

With a PPA, you do not own the system. The solar company owns the system and you pay them for your power usage instead of the electric company. The benefit is that the rate is typically lower than the electric company.

There are two PPA options which can make a huge difference to overall cost:

Price increases year over year – this usually starts out lower but overall cost will be based on how much it increases every year. This is important!
Price is fixed for the life of the system. This usually starts a little higher than the increase rate, but if you calculate the overall cost, you’ll likely pay less for this option.

Considerations:

Batteries currently have a 10 year warranty. With the PPA, you don’t pay for the battery replacement. They run about $10k each right now so this can be a huge factor. In our case, it was still cheaper over 25 years to purchase, even if we replace all 3 batteries twice during that time.

Interest Rates

The most cost effective way to pay for solar is with cash. But since most of us don’t typically have that much on hand, making a decision about loans is another important aspect.

We got offers of 3.99, 4.99, 6.99 and 8.99. Believe it or not, the 8.99 was the least expensive over 25 years.

Why? While the lower rates “seem” good, the company actually increases the price of the system to give you the lower rate. You have to calculate the entire cost to make an educated decision.

Warranty

Most companies provide a 25 year warranty with a guaranteed kw production. Some companies provide a 30 year warranty. This means they will pay to fix any problems that come up with production loss – if it is related to the system itself.

Other Considerations

Ground vs Roof Mount

Ground mount is more expensive. However, roof mount may not give you the full 100% offset.

In our case, the roof mount only offset approximately 35% of our usage. So it wasn’t the best choice.

The most productive system will be facing south – our roof faces east on one side and west on the other, reducing the production. That means even if we could offset the entire production, we would need more panels to do so, which would increase system cost.

The ground mount system is easily able to be placed facing due south.

Another concern is the need to repair or replace the roof. If for any reason you need to do that, you will have to pay to have the solar system dismantled and taken down, do the roof repairs, and then pay to have the system re-installed.

That also means you will be paying the electric company for power usage on top of whatever system payment you have.

One of the most common complaints I’ve seen in recent years is from people who have been unable to get their system back up and running after a roof repair.

So if you’re doing roof mount and you plan to replace your roof in the future, I highly recommend doing it before you have a solar system installed.

Contract

DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING until you’re ready to commit.

One company would not give a complete proposal until they did a site survey. They gave rough numbers but wanted a full commitment before they gave us final numbers.

With todays technology being what it is, there is no reason you can’t get a proposal without a site survey. There may be other factors that com into play after the site survey (such as the roof needs repair or replacement, trees need to be cut, etc) but for the most part, satellite technology will tell the company everything they need to know about your property.

The Companies We Looked At

Powur

I’ll put them first because that’s who we went with.

They’ve been in business since 2012. They use Q Cell panels, which are the most reliable and have the highest productivity. They use Tesla Powerwalls for the batteries, which also are the most reliable. And the communication was so much better than any of the other companies.

The first call I got was from the VP on his cell phone. He connected me to a sales rep, who is also the project manager so he will stay in the loop throughout the process.

Knowing I have both of these people to call if I have a problem eases my mind greatly.

As with most solar companies, they contract a 3rd party to do the installation. That company has been easy to deal with and has also been in business long enough to have a solid reputation.

Do me a favor – if you go with Powur, let them know I sent you. I get $1k which would be really nice to put toward paying off this system.

Update: Powur has been great to work with. They used Safe Haven Solar out of Yuba Coty for installation – awesome family owned company. We are still very happy with our decision. There was a 4 month delay due to Tesla having powerwall production issues, but it’s worth the wait.

SunPower

SP is in bankruptcy. It seems they will survive restructuring, but that’s still a concern.

I had an initial conversation with a SunPower rep, but she made an appointment for me with a local contractor and the SP communication ended there.

The local contractor came to the house and showed us on his computer what the system would look like.

He shared some options and sent me several proposals.

He was the most expensive overall but his system was bigger and not necessarily better.

SunRun

SunRun was the first company I spoke with. They gave me an initial proposal for a roof mount PPA system which only offset 30% of our usage.

They made an appointment to send out a site surveyor who would take measurements and provide options for both roof and ground mount.

The surveyor was not interested said he could only take measurements & photos for a roof mount. He refused to make any calls to figure out next steps. So I sent him on his way and called the SP rep.

There was a clear communication gap between the sales rep and the surveyor and the design team.

To make matter worse, the sales rep disappeared after that. No response for a week, when a supervisor called to try to fix the issue.

The rep had a family crisis and took time off. Ok – I get that – but someone should have stepped in to take over his calls in the meantime.

That issue aside, the other communication issues were a big deal for me.

Tesla / Freedom Forever

Tesla used to manage their own sales and installations. Changes in recent years have them using a 3rd party, Freedom Forever.

FF had good communication and provided us a decent quote for a ground mount system with 110% offset. However, they showed us having depleted our battery usage by 9pm, even in the summer months. This didn’t make sense but it also meant we would be paying the electric company approximately 20% of what we currently pay.

I brought it to their attention and the rep was going to discuss it with the design team and provide a new proposal.

I never heard from them again.

Conclusion

While Powur has been great and I highly recommend them, I still strongly encourage you to get multiple quotes. At a minimum, I would talk with Powur, Freedom Forever & SunRun.

But don’t let them (SunRun specifically) push you into signing anything until you’ve made a final decision!

To improve the quality of education at Corning elementary and middle schools; replace leaky roofs; make safety and security improvements; upgrade inadequate electrical systems; and renovate, upgrade, and modernize classrooms, restrooms, and facilities; shall Corning Union Elementary School District’s measure authorizing $13,700,000 in bonds, at legal rates, and levying approximately $28.84 per $100,000 of assessed valuation (raising $809,000 annually) while bonds are outstanding, be adopted, with annual audits, citizens’ oversight, NO money for salaries and all money staying local”

MEASURE K

To improve Lassen View Elementary School; construct/modernize classrooms, restrooms and school facilities; repair leaky roofs; make health, safety and security improvements; and replace outdated HVAC systems; shall the Lassen View Union Elementary School District measure authorizing $3,500,000 in bonds, at legal interest rates, and levying approximately $30 per $100,000 of assessed valuation (raising $232,000 annually) while bonds are outstanding, be adopted, with a board appointed citizens’ oversight committee and annual independent audits to assure proper expenditure of funds?

MEASURE L – Red Bluff Joint Union High School District Career Readiness, Repairs, and Safety Measure

To upgrade local schools with classrooms/ facilities preparing students for future jobs and apprenticeships; replace leaky roofs, plumbing, electrical; improve campus safety and supervision/ wellness of students; acquire/ construct/ modernize facilities, shall Red Bluff Joint Union High School District’s measure authorizing $33.6 million of bonds at legal rates, levying 3¢ per $100 of assessed value (averaging $2.5 million annually) while bonds are outstanding, be adopted with citizen oversight, annual audits, no money for administrators?

MEASURE M – Red Bluff Union Elementary School District

To improve the quality of education; make safety and security improvements; replace leaky roofs; modernize, renovate, and upgrade outdated classrooms, restrooms and school facilities; and replace aging plumbing, sewer, and electrical systems; shall Red Bluff Union Elementary School District’s measure be adopted authorizing $19,000,000 of bonds at legal rates, levying approximately $30 per $100,000 assessed value ($1,100,000 annually) while bonds are outstanding, with annual audits, independent citizens’ oversight, NO money for administrative salaries and all funds for local schools?

Christian’s & Politics

I’ve heard a lot of argument in recent years that the church should not be involved in politics – vote, sure, do that if you must – but running for office or having a pastor share insights about candidates and propositions, no way.

The Bible tells us that government was God’s idea – so my question is this: why on earth would we choose to abandon it and hand it over evil?

If we want our government to reflect our Christian values, then Christian’s need to run for office and we all need to vote in a manner that aligns with God’s Word.

We need our pastors, who we trust to teach the Word, discussing how the candidates and ballot issues align with Word.

How Are President & VP Nominees Chosen?

For each of the two main parties, each state sets its own process for selecting its nominee for the president & vice president races.

Both Democrat & Republican parties hold national conventions during which delegates cast a vote for their candidate of choice.

The Republican National Convention is scheduled for June 15-18, 2024 in Milwaukee, WI. In addition to selecting the presidential nominee, party platforms are adopted at the conventions (2020 adjourned without adopting a new platform).

Republican delegates are “pledged” to vote as per the decision of the state or territory primary election/caucus. Democrats also have “non-pledged” superdelegates (mainly party leaders & elected officials) who may vote for a candidate of their choice.

The primary elections / caucuses are staggered over the first half of the year. Traditionally Iowa & New Hampshire are held first in Jan or Feb; California is historically held in June, however this years California primary election is March 5. This gives the state more of an opportunity to sway the election (see below about bonus delegates).

Most states use a closed primary voting system – only party members can vote for a primary candidate.

14 states use an open primary system which allows voters to pick a party on Election Day.

A hand full of states hold caucuses to select their nominee for President. During these state events, voters gather to discuss and select a presidential candidate.

Most states have a “winner take all” voting requirement, meaning the delegates for that state must vote for the candidate who had the most votes in that state.

Some states use a “proportional representation” system where the pledged delegates vote for the candidate selected by their district, which may be different from the state majority.

Delegates

National committeman, national committeewoman, chairman for each state, DC, Samoa, Virgin Islands, Guam, Puerto Rico, & Northern Mariano Island
10 at large delegates for each state
3 delegates per congressional district
Washington DC: 16 delegates

Bonus delegates:

States that cast the majority of their votes for the previous elections nominee gets an additional 4.5 delegates plus a number of delegates equal to 60% of their electoral votes
States & territories are also awarded bonus delegates for electing republicans to:
- Governor – 1 delegate
- State legislature majority – 1 for each chamber that has the majority
- At least 50% of the states US House of Rep are Republican – 1 delegate
- US senate – 1 delegate for each Republican Senator

I mentioned earlier about the California primary being moved from June to March. Do you think it is possible that if states voting after California think there may be a successful candidate other than Trump, they may vote for someone else in order to be entitled to bonus delegates?

Letter to Tehama Board of Supervisors re: Concerns of Election Systems

Dear Supervisor,

As I’m sure you are aware, Shasta County Board of Supervisors has voted to cancel the contract with Dominion Voting Systems and go to hand counting ballots. I am also aware that some of you believe Dominion is safe and hand counting is prohibitively costly.

Many of our citizens, myself included, have grave concerns about machine voting. Rather than addressing election concerns, elected officials across the country (including here in Tehama County) have simply denied voters the opportunity to validate that our elections are indeed free and fair.

We deserve to be heard and our concerns addressed. We already feel written off. Our elections clerk seems to have convinced you that the voting system is fine. We know otherwise and you should be challenging the clerk to prove that the machines are as accurate and safe as hand counting. It is not acceptable to simply say that the clerk thinks it is safe. She – and you – need to prove it to our satisfaction.

Please take the time to review the information below and expand your thinking. I have sent information about our concerns several times and have yet for even one Supervisor to respond.

I am in the process of coordinating meetings for our county residents to discuss our concerns. I’d like to invite you to either attend these meetings or meet with me one on one. In the meantime, I have compiled information regarding the vulnerability of machines below for your review. Your constituents have been learning a lot about the machines – we expect you to do the same. This is too important for you not to spend the time to learn what we know.

2020 Forensic Audit Reports

Below are 3 audits from the 2020 election showing the vulnerabilities of the Dominion Voting System. I’ve pulled out a few comments from each of the reports, the link to the full reports are also included.

Antrim County Michigan

We conclude that the Dominion Voting System is intentionally and purposefully designed with inherent errors to create systemic fraud and influence election results. The system intentionally generates an enormously high number of ballot errors. The electronic ballots are then transferred for adjudication. The intentional errors lead to bulk adjudication of ballots with no oversight, no transparency, and no audit trail. This leads to voter or election fraud. Based on our study, weconclude that The Dominion Voting System should not be used in Michigan. We further conclude that the results of Antrim County should not have been certified.
The allowable election error rate established by the Federal Election Commission guidelines is of 1 in 250,000 ballots (.0008%). We observed an error rate of 68.05%. This demonstrated a significant and fatal error in security and election integrity.
In Central Lake Township there were 1,222 ballots reversed out of 1,491 total ballots cast, resulting in an 81.96% rejection rate. All reversed ballots are sent to adjudication for a decision by election personnel.
It is critical to understand that the Dominion system classifies ballots into two categories, 1) normal ballots and 2) adjudicated ballots. Ballots sent to adjudication can be altered by administrators, and adjudication files can be moved between different Results Tally and Reporting (RTR) terminals with no audit trail of which administrator actually adjudicates (i.e. votes) the ballot batch.
A staggering number of votes required adjudication. This was a 2020 issue not seen in previous election cycles still stored on the server. This is caused by intentional errors in the system. The intentional errors lead to bulk adjudication of ballots with no oversight, no transparency or audit trail.
The following is a breakdown of the votes tabulated for the 2020 election in Antrim County, showing different dates for the tabulation of the same votes. The Antrim County Clerk and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson have stated that the election night error (detailed below) by the vote “flip” from Trump to Biden, was the result of human error caused by the failure to update the Mancelona Township tabulator prior to election night for a down ballot race. We disagree and conclude that the vote flip occurred because of machine error built into the voting software designed to create error.

Maricopa County Arizona

The audit report identifies more than 57K questionable votes, intentionally deleted election files, and other suspicious voting machine activity.

Major issues identified:

255,326 early votes are recorded in the VM55 file of counted ballots but are missing from the EV33 file 2
17,322 duplicate votes (where voters sent in 2 or more ballots) that were illegally counted in the final certified tally (a large surge of these were dated the week following the election)
27,807 ballots cast from individuals who had moved prior to the election, and are unlikely to have physically received their ballots legally
Envelopes without signatures that were stamped as “approved”
Ballot envelopes showing an apparent “approved” stamp behind the basic graphics of the envelope, suggesting tampering, or at the very least, poor quality scanning and archival of envelope images
The systems related to elections integrity had numbers that could not balance or agree with each other
The voter rolls and the registration management process itself having many data integrity issues. For instance, over 200 individuals were easily identifiable as likely being the same person but having two different Voter IDs and voting twice in the election.
There were unexplained large purges of registered voters, right after the election, of people who had voted in the election
There was back-dating of registrations, adjustments made to historical voting and voter records, unexplained linking of voter registration affidavits to multiple voters and more
Files were missing from the Election Management System (EMS) Server and other voting machines, either intentionally or negligently removed
Ballot images on the EMS were corrupt or missing
On the ballot side, batches were not always clearly delineated, duplicated ballots were missing the required serial numbers, some originals were duplicated more than once, and the auditors were never provided chain-of-custody documentation for the ballots for the time-period prior to the ballot’s movement into the auditors’ care. This all increased the complexity and difficulty in properly auditing the results.
There were significant anomalies identified in the ratio of hand-folded ballots, on-demand printed ballots, and a significant increase in provisional ballot rejections for a mail-in ballot already being cast, suggestive of mail-in ballots being cast for voters without their knowledge
Remote Access and “Terminal Services” features of Windows were enabled allowing machines to be remotely controlled

House of Representatives

Kevin Kiley (R-CA) shared that the House “voted to end Biden’s vaccine mandate for healthcare workers and passed the Pandemic is Over Act to end the national COVID emergency.” Biden & Newsom both have stated that the pandemic is over – well, they’ve scheduled it to end on May 11.

Whether you believe there is election fraud in our county (and country) or not, every one of us should be able to know for a fact that it doesn’t exist.

It’s not enough for election officials to simply say it. They ought to be able to prove it. Can they? With machines – can they actually prove that fraud doesn’t exist? Can they show me that MY vote counted fairly?

The Shasta County Board of Supervisors have determined that there is enough question with the Dominion machines to be concerned. So they are cancelling their contract.

So what about Tehama County?

We use Dominion machines. We have very outdated voter rolls. And many of us have concerns.

I personally believe our Elections Clerk is doing her job “by the book”. I do not believe she is corrupt. However, she doesn’t know what she doesn’t know! And she has been less than willing to hear and understand our concerns.

My expectation of EVERY elected official is that they be 100% transparent – more than that, they should be looking for ways to instill trust with their constituents.

During the last election, my daughter noticed a blue, ethernet cable connecting the voting machine to a small black box when she was casting her vote. Upon hearing about it, my husband looked for it when he cast his vote and then asked the poll worker about it. She told him it was a power cord. A few hours later, a third person who went to vote noted that there was no blue cable.

It clearly was not a power cord. So I have 2 questions:

Why was an internet cable connected to the machine?
Why did the poll worker lie about it?

These are very small, but important, examples of why WE THE PEOPLE are concerned about our elections.

What can we do?

The Board of Supervisors are the decisionmakers about the contracts we issue. Like Shasta, they can cancel the Dominion contract and look for alternative solutions.

IT STARTS WITH US!

This is an uphill battle. We need people who are willing to dig in and do some work. We need to review voter registration data, canvas to verify the data, learn about the issues with machines and work to find solutions to ensure we have free and fair elections. We need to talk with our elected officials about our concerns and ask them to take action.

We also need to be prepared to be part of the solution! How will votes be counted? Who will count them? Who will observe the counting and ensure it is being done fairly?

Start by learning about the issues. I have shared a lot of information here on this website – read, watch videos, study data shared by experts.

Talk to our elected officials and insist they learn as well. A copy of this message is being sent to the Tehama County Board of Supervisors. I encourage you to follow up with them – their contact info is listed below.

Can the President and VP be from the same state?

The answer is Yes. But there is a catch!

When voters cast their ballot – we vote President & VP together – it doesn’t matter if they are from the same state.

But when the Electoral College votes, they vote for each position separately. And only one of those positions can be from the state they represent.

So if the Pres & VP candidates on a ballot are both from Texas, the Texas Electors can only vote for one of them and have to give the other vote to someone else.

In 2000, Bush and Cheney were in fact lboth from Texas, but Cheney registered to vote in Wyoming so it wouldn’t become an issue. They ended up with 271 EC votes (270 are required to win). If Cheney had been a Texas registered voter, the Electors would have had to choose between Bush & Cheney. Texas has 32 EC votes so one of them would have received only 239 votes.

ACTION: UPCOMING SCOTUS HEARING – Send a Letter!

On Jan 6, 2023, the 9 Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) will meet in conference to vote (only 4 needed) to move to a hearing on Docket #22-380:

Brunson vs. Alma S. Adams et al (Biden, Harris, Pence & 385 Members of Congress)

The lawsuit claims the defendants have broken their oath of office “by voting AGAINST the proposition (that came from members of congress) to investigate the claims that there were enemies of the constitution who successfully rigged the election”.

These defendants have all taken this oath: “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic…”

When confronted with evidence of election fraud, all of these defendants voted to NOT INVESTIGATE the evidence.

THE ISSUE:

After the 2020 election, 100 members of Congress claimed there were threats to the constitution by way of fraud in the 2020 election. The defendants were required by their oath of office to investigate these charges – whether they believed there was fraud or not. They voted not to investigate. This is a clear violation of their oath.

THE REMEDY:

The lawsuit asks that the defendants be permanently removed from office, and not allowed to hold a public office again.

In addition, the complaints have requested criminal investigation.

Overvoting / Undervoting

Overvoting occurs when you select more choices than you are allowed. Example – if there are 2 candidates for 1 position but you select both candidates.

Under voting occurs when you don’t select the full number of options. Example: you do not select an option or if there are 2 positions available and you only select one.

What happens to your ballot in these circumstances?

If you vote by mail:

When your ballot is run through the tabulator, the election worker will be notified of the over or undervote and the ballot will be sent to adjudication.

Adjudication is when an elections supervisor reviews the ballot to try to determine what the voter intended. If you overvoted but clearly marked an X through one of the choices and wrote your intended choice, they will correct that in the computer.

If they cannot determine your intended choice, they will invalidate that race (not the whole ballot, just the specific selection).

If you vote in person:

When you insert the ballot into the tabulator, a notification will appear showing overbite or undervote. You have 2 choices:

Accept the ballot as is. (Undervotes will be entered as is, the entire race for an overvote will not be counted.)
Eject the ballot and ask for a new one so you can re-do the entire ballot.

Every person in Lisa Dawson’s path to freedom – the dispatcher, officers, advocate, doctors, investigators, attorneys, counselors – had to play his or her role perfectly to get and keep the attacker in custody and ensure the victim felt safe enough to take every next step.

How YOU Can Help

Whether you have a friend you think is being abused or your see signs of abuse in a stranger, most of us have no idea how to help. Fear for their own safety or of putting the victim in further danger often prevent bystanders from getting involved.

Knowing both what to do and when to do it can be a tricky combination. Below are my thoughts along with a few links on how and when to get involved.

Start by learning what local resources are available. Keep the Crisis Hotline numbers in your phone or on small slips of paper to share with someone who needs help.

Call 9-1-1 if someone is in immediate danger.

Helping Someone You Know

Contact Empower Tehama or One Safe Place – they do this every day and can advise you on how to help
Let the victim know you are concerned about their safety – ask if they need help and tell them about local resources
Offer a ride to one of the organizations listed above
Explain that free, confidential help is available help for victims and their children
Let them know they’re not alone
Be patient – the mental control abusers have over their victims is difficult to understand; it may take numerous efforts for a victim to get help
The most dangerous time is when a victim leaves an abusive relationship – professional advocates can help them create a safety plan so when they are ready, they don’t have to try and figure out where to go

Helping a Stranger

Assess the situation – engaging may be unsafe for you and the victim
Discreetly make eye contact with the victim – they may be feeling very alone and isolated, let them know you see them
- If you can safely do so: ask, whisper, or simply mouth “are you ok?” or “do you need help?”
Be an active witness
- Make note of descriptions, details and vehicle information
- Take photos or videos (if you can do so safely and discreetly)
If you don’t think 911 is warranted, but you think they need help, go to an area you can talk privately and call Empower Tehama or One Safe Place and ask for their advice

California Court Justices are appointed by the Governor. Newly appointed judges are listed on the ballot during the next gubernatorial race. This is a YES /NO vote for a 12 year term – they will be listed again at that time. Take the time to read about the individuals and decide whether you want to vote to keep them in their roles. Keep in mind that if Brian Dahle (R) wins the election, he would be in the position to appoint the new justices.

I’m in agreement with all but Prop 31 in the Reform California Voter Guide. Decide for yourself what you think is important – my decisions are below.

PROP 1: Reproductive Freedom

My Vote: NO – Prop 1 isn’t about healthcare – it’s about politics. This proposition allows for abortion up to and including birth. I personally believe life begins at conception. I understand their can be circumstances when difficult decisions need to be made, but I am not in agreement with a blanket law allowing abortions at all stages of pregnancy.

PROP 28: Funding Arts & Music Education

My Vote: NO – Arts & Music are important, but I’m not convinced this is the right solution.

There is NO formal opposition to Prop 28. Opponents argue that the measure would limit schools’ options to navigate future budget crises.

“Proposition 28 would require the state to set aside 1% of revenue in the general fund for arts education in K-12 public schools.”

Carl DeMaio, chairman of Reform California, believes Prop 28 would lead to budget cuts in core education programs like reading, writing, and arithmetic.

“Prop 28 sounds good on the surface — more funding for arts and music — but the language is fatally flawed to allow diversion of funding from other education programs that are already not meeting the performance goals we’ve set,” says DeMaio.

He further notes, “California’s public schools are failing and it isn’t because we aren’t offering enough music and arts programs – it is because we have a total lack of accountability within the bureaucracies that run these school districts.”

My Vote: NO – dialysis patients are they will not be able to get proper treatment. Prop 9 is too restrictive. Dialysis patients, nurses & doctors support NO on this proposition.

“The state of California recently ruled that 90% of rideshare vehicles must be electric vehicles by 2030. Lyft is trying to force the taxpayers to foot the bill – rather than spend their own corporate money to support their drivers and comply with the new law.”

“Prop 30 revenue will be put in a special interest lock box overseen by an unelected board, redirecting general fund monies traditionally used to support California’s public schools, teachers and students.”

RBJUHS District Board

Barbara Klotz is a conservative who has been supporting our group and coming to rally’s. I support her candidacy! She’s the only one I know anything about.

Red Bluff City Council

I don’t live in the city limits so I don’t get a vote, but their decisions still impact those of us who call Red Bluff home.

Who I would vote for if I were in the city limits:

Kris Dieters is a current councilwoman and is aligned with the majority of our local political beliefs. There is a talk about a recent decision made by Ms Dieters and 2 other councilmen in regards to Dog Island Park being a designated homeless encampment. Before you write them off, talk with them. The 3 that voted this way are and have been representing the people of Tehama County as we would want to be represented. Get the full picture before voting out the good ones!
Pat Hurton is a long time resident of Red Bluff, retired law enforcement officer, and pastor. He is also the current chairman of Christian Peace Officers of Tehama County. He has been attending the council meetings for quite some time and has been disappointed with some of the decisions made in the past. He sees the need for good, local representation and wants to make a difference.
Johanna Jones is also a current councilwoman. She is often aligned with Ms Eyestone. However – compared to those listed below, she is a less problematic choice.

Who I would not vote for:

Danielle Eyestone is a current councilwoman and former mayor pro tem. She was removed as mayor pro tem last year when she became visibly and verbally angry toward the other councilmen about an incident that she believed was a violation of the Brown Act (which is designed to ensure public transparency). She ended up walking out of the closed session meeting. The DA ultimately determined no violation had been committed. However 3 of the other councilmen (Parker, Dieters & Gonzales) determined her behavior was not appropriate for someone leading the council; they voted to strip her of her title as mayor pro tem. Cody Strock ran for council 2 years ago. He is young, which is not in and of itself a bad thing! But his grand ideas, which sound good on the surface, are not realistic. When problems were pointed out to him during the last election, he became defensive and argumentative. Ask the very hard questions – but make sure you have the same conversations with some of the other sitting councilmen (Kris Dieters, JR Gonzales, Clay Parker).

Measure E

PLEASE VOTE NO! Measure E would repeal and replace City Council ordinance 1063, which was developed through an extensive Committee process that ultimately provides accountability among government officials and commercial cannabis businesses within Red Bluff.

CITY COUNCIL ARGUMENT AGAINST MEASURE E

Cannabis dispensaries, distribution, delivery, cultivation, manufacturing, microbusiness, and testing laboratories are currently allowed. In fact, three dispensary permits have already been approved for operation within the City of Red Bluff.

Passage of Measure E would rescind and replace City of Red Bluff Ordinance 1063 and while it would not invalidate the permits and development agreements that the City has diligently been working on for the past two years, current permittees may not be re-permitted at their annual review under Measure E.

Measure E has several legal deficiencies that would subject it, and the City, to legal challenges and at least partial invalidity:

(1) the residency preference would subject commercial cannabis permit applicants potentially violating our Constitution’s Commerce Clause, Privileges and Immunities Clause, and Equal protection Clause,

2) the restrictions on criminal background of applicants could be unconstitutionally vague; and

(3) the process for revoking commercial cannabis permits may violate a permittee’s procedural due process rights.

Finally, there are ambiguities within the Measure that will complicate implementation if passed and Measure E does not reflect best practices for commercial cannabis permitting ordinances.

Measure E would have a detrimental financial effect on the City because the initial fees will likely not cover the City’s costs of processing applications, requiring a subsidy from the General Fund. Additionally, Measure E does not provide for public benefit payments in connection with their applications. The financial loss to the City if this Measure is passed is estimated to be approximately $400,000 annually. Furthermore, Measure E allows consumption lounges within the City, while City of Red Bluff Ordinance 1063 does not allow consumption lounges.

The City Council is opposed to Measure E. It is unnecessary since the City has passed Ordinance 1063 which already permits cannabis operations within City limits and urges the public to vote No.

“This is a misguided and ill-informed effort to remove and replace Red Bluff’s recently adopted Cannabis Ordinance. The language contained in Measure E to replace the ordinance has already been rejected by the City Council, after legal counsel determined that several clauses are non-enforceable and would subject the city to expensive and lengthy litigation.”

IMPARTIAL ANALYSIS BY CITY ATTORNEY MEASURE E

In February 2022, the City Council of the City of Red Bluff adopted Ordinance 1063 which authorized Commercial Cannabis dispensaries, manufacturing, cultivation, delivery, and microbusinesses within the City of Red Bluff.

Measure E seeks voter approval to repeal and replace Ordinance 1063 with an ordinance that would amend the Zoning Chapter of the Red Bluff Municipal Code to permit and regulate commercial and personal marijuana or cannabis activities.

Measure E would not invalidate the cannabis storefront permits or development agreements currently in place pursuant to Ordinance 1063, however the permit renewal process would be modified and there is no guarantee that the current permit holders meet Measure E standards for re-permitting.

Measure E would allow the following state commercial cannabis license types to operate in the City: storefront retail, retail delivery (non-storefront), microbusiness, manufacturing (including volatile), distribution, testing, cannabis events, and indoor cultivation. It would also permit cannabis consumption lounges if permitted by state law.
Measure E allows 1 storefront retail business, delivery retailer or consumption lounge for every 5,000 people in the City.

Measure E establishes a “first come, first served” process for selecting applicants to obtain a retail or consumption lounge cannabis permit. The City must select applicants based on a ranking system of “social equity” factors which prioritize applicants living in or within 10 miles of Red Bluff for the last two years.

Cannabis businesses must be at least 500 feet from schools, day care facilities, and youth centers when established.

Retailers may operate in the central, historic, and general commercial zoning districts, and industrial districts. Other commercial cannabis businesses are allowed in certain commercial or industrial zones, though cannabis event organizers may be located in any district when operating as a home occupation.

Measure E creates a permit procedure that gives the City Planning Director authority to approve applications. There is no requirement for Planning Commission approval.

The initiative requires permittees to maintain odor control systems but does not require security systems. It provides the City cannot be liable for its permitting decision, but it also prevents the City from requesting applicants indemnify the City for claims others may bring due to the applicant’s conduct.

Measure E allows personal cannabis cultivation inside a dwelling or accessory building that complies with state and local building codes. However, it does not create a mechanism for inspections to ensure compliance with such codes. Although outdoor personal cultivation is prohibited, the City Council may allow it.

Measure E allows up to 6 plants to be grown indoors per property unless cultivation is for medical use. It then allows up to 12 indoor plants per qualified patient or primary caregiver.

The City estimates that the Measure E will result in approximately $400,000.00 in lost revenue annually due to the lack of Public Benefit Fee provisions in the initiative.

Measure E can be approved by the voters by a majority vote of the ballots cast on the measure.

ARGUMENT IN FAVOR OF MEASURE F

Our elementary schools are the most important asset in our community and should be our number one priority. From higher achieving students, to greater neighborhood safety and improved property values, quality schools make a difference. Teachers and staff do their best in educating our children, many classrooms and school facilities at the Red Bluff Union Elementary School District are outdated and inadequate to provide students with the schools they need to succeed. This is why our children need your YES vote on Measure F!

Although our elementary schools have had some major renovations recently through the successful passage of Measure C, our work is not done. It’s time to finish our plan to fully renovate all our schools and provide quality education to our local children. These aging schools need major classroom and infrastructure improvements to preserve the quality of education provided to local children. By investing in our schools, we can meet today’s safety, technological, and educational standards and better our community.

If passed, Measure F will provide funding to make facility improvements at local elementary schools including:
• Repairing or replacing leaky roofs
• Replacing outdated heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems
• Upgrading inadequate electrical systems
• Replacing deteriorating plumbing and sewer systems
• Making health, safety and handicapped accessibility improvements
Measure F makes financial sense and protects taxpayers.
• All funds must be spent locally and cannot be taken by the State.
• By law, spending must be reviewed and annually audited by an independent citizens’ oversight committee.
• Funds can only be spent to improve our schools, not for teacher or administrator salaries.

Measure F upgrades and renovates old and inadequate school facilities, improves the education of local children, and maintains the quality of our community.

WHY AND HOW TO VOTE IN PERSON

I’m hearing a lot of recommendations to “vote early”, even from the Republican Party. They say this because 1) once your ballot is received, they can remove you from their outreach list and 2) the longer you wait, the higher possibility you will forget.

BUT is it really better?

Per the Election Integrity Project, “When you return your ballot in an envelope with your name and address clearly visible, you are, in effect, waiving your right to a secret ballot, as you, the voter, are clearly identifiable. You are also subjecting your ballot to innumerable opportunities for potential manipulation as it passes through hundreds of hands of postal workers, seasonal elections officials, ballot traffickers and signature verifiers.”

DID YOU KNOW???: In the 2020 election, the Tehama County mail in ballots did not align in the tabulation machine correctly. Our election clerk (elected position), assembled a team to recreate each and every ballot. Which means, the specific ballot you filled out was not counted, a duplicate was created in its place. I trust our clerk, but mistakes happen and without oversight, we have no way to feel confident that our ballots were counted correctly.

Find your voting location and go there on Election Day. Tehama County Polling Locations
Bring your mail in ballot!!
- Historically, our county has a different ballot for same day voting. Give your Mail-in ballot to a poll worker when you sign in to vote. Be sure to mark surrendered in big letters across the ballots and envelope – but wait to do this until you are sure you will get a new ballot.
- If you do not bring your mail in ballot, you will be given a provisional ballot. The election clerk will decide whether your provisional ballot is accepted and counted.
Fill out your ballot in a private booth
When complete, find the tabulation machine (a poll worker will help you)
- Put the ballot(s) into the machine
- The machine will read the ballot and show your selections on the screen – scroll through to confirm your selections are correct
- When you are satisfied, finalize your vote

SHARPIES & BALL POINT PENS

In 2020, some counties across the country had challenges using sharpies on the ballots. Sharpies bleed through the paper and may taint a ballot selection box on the reverse side. Our ballots should be aligned so that can’t happen, but why use a pen that could cause any question?

When asked about it earlier this year, our local elections office stated that ball point pens gum up the machines, which means the voting/counting process has to be stopped so they can clean the machines.

Some polling locations on Tehama County only have sharpies available. You may want to bring your own pen to ensure bleed through does not happen.

BE A POLL WATCHER!

Tehama County Election Candidates

Below is a link to the local candidates who will be on the November ballot, including contact info.

Tehama Candidates on the Ballot

The only opinions I personally have are about the RB City council. I don’t live in the city limits so I don’t get a vote, but their decisions still impact those of us who call Red Bluff home.

Who I would vote for if I were in the city limits:

Kris Dieters is a current councilwoman and is aligned with the majority of our local political beliefs. There is a talk about a recent decision made by Ms Dieters and 2 other councilmen in regards to Dog Island Park being a designated homeless encampment. Before you write them off, talk with them. The 3 that voted this way are and have been representing the people of Tehama County as we would want to be represented. Get the full picture before voting out the good ones!
Pat Hurton is a long time resident of Red Bluff, retired law enforcement officer, and pastor. He is also the current chairman of Christian Peace Officers of Tehama County. He has been attending the council meetings for quite some time and has been disappointed with some of the decisions made in the past. He sees the need for good, local representation and wants to make a difference.

Who I would not vote for:

Danielle Eyesrone is a current councilwoman and former mayor pro tem. She was removed as mayor pro tem last year when she became visibly and verbally angry toward the other councilmen about an incident that she believed was a violation of the Brown Act (which is designed to ensure public transparency). She ended up walking out of the closed session meeting. The DA ultimately determined no violation had been committed. However 3 of the other councilmen (Parker, Dieters & Gonzales) determined her behavior was not appropriate for someone leading the council; they voted to strip her of her title as mayor pro tem. Johanna Jones is also a current councilwoman. She is often aligned with Ms Eyestone.
Cody Strock ran for council 2 years ago. He is young, which is not in and of itself a bad thing! But his grand ideas, which sound good on the surface, are not realistic. When problems were pointed out to him, he became defensive and argumentative. He is also the author of Measure E – which would turn Tehama into pot central.

Get to know these people! Email them, call them – find out if they are aligned with your values!

Personally, I’m tired of elected officials who don’t listen to or care about our values and opinions. We need people who want to take a stand for the people of our community.

When the mask and vaccine mandates were an issue last year, I sent a great deal of information to all of our county officials. Some responded with support – some, like Ms Eyestone, responded with criticism (her emails were quite dismissive because she didn’t agree with my political stand).

We have the opportunity to create change for the better – let’s do that!
